EFBW to sign Circular Plastics Alliance’s milestone declaration

After six months of intensive collaboration between public and private stakeholders from the plastics value chains, the European Federation of Bottled Waters (EFBW) is looking forward to signing the Declaration of the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA) tomorrow.

EFBW’s representative at the event, Henrik Gotterbarm, says: “Today marks an important milestone towards the use of more recycled plastic in Europe. Plastic waste should not be in our environment, whether land or sea, so I am very happy to see that the members of the plastics value chain and public authorities are relentless in making plastics circular. We share the uniqueness of Europe’s natural world with consumers; our products, natural mineral and spring waters, are simply produced by nature. We carefully protect and preserve the natural environment around the water sources and our packaging also needs to protect this high quality natural product. To achieve this, we need to work together, investing in systems to provide a supply of high-quality, food grade recycled materials that achieve closed loop recycling -turning old bottles into new ones.

The Circular Plastics Alliance was launched by the European Commission following the adoption of its EU Plastics Strategy and the industry’s voluntary commitments on higher use of recycled plastics. By signing the declaration, EFBW contributes to the CPA’s goal to ensure that 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics are used to make products in Europe in 2025.

EFBW welcomes that all plastics value chain partners demonstrated their willingness to closely collaborate in order to make plastics even more circular. EFBW Secretary General, Patricia Fosselard, highlights: “On the 15th of May 2018, EFBW was the first sector within the food and drink industry to come forward with pledges, aiming to incorporate at least 25% recycled PET into new bottles by 2025. We will remain determined to be a driving force and to collaborate with our value chain partners in order to realize the Alliance’s vision. If we continue to collaborate, every bottle can be given a second life!
